Why This Reference Exists
Printed local directories no longer provide a complete answer to who lives in Amherst. The underlying evidence did not disappear. It is divided among Town of Amherst assessment and municipal records, Erie County recording offices, New York State portals, and historical collections. A property question, an old address, and a family-history question often require different custodians. We collect the official routes, access conditions, coverage notes, and local-history leads so people can start with the record that fits the question.
What the Directory Points To
- Pages by research angle: the street directory for address-keyed records, the city directory for historical volumes, and the resident lookup for one-person verification.
- Custodian routes: Town of Amherst assessment and clerk contacts, Erie County Clerk records, election access, courts, vital-record instructions, libraries, and archives.
- Practical methods: parcel-to-deed trails, directory-year comparisons, and record-specific fallback channels when a portal is incomplete.
- Access limits: New York FOIL rules, confidential voter and address protections, sealed records, and the difference between an index and a certified record.
Limits of Our Role
Amherst Residents Directory is a privately operated reference. It is not connected to the Town of Amherst, Erie County, New York State, a court, a library, or a records custodian. We cannot determine whether someone currently lives at an address, obtain or certify a record, edit a government roll, or give legal advice. Only the agency or collection holding a record can verify, correct, or release it under the applicable law.
- We cannot authenticate a search result or settle a record dispute.
- We cannot access sealed, confidential, or otherwise restricted information.
- We cannot add people to, or remove people from, a custodian’s list or index.
- We cannot promise that an office’s coverage date, fee, or portal feature has not changed.
- We cannot replace an attorney, a clerk, or an archival researcher where their help is needed.
Custodian offices alone can certify or correct their records. This reference is not a consumer reporting agency, and its information is not for FCRA-regulated decisions.
